The Brittle Star is not easily observed as it lives in the marine environment. Brittle Stars are broadly referred to as Echinoderms, which are marine animals having radial symmetry with five parts, often with spines.

There are at least 40 species of brittle stars in Victorian waters of which two species which inhabit seagrass are considered threatened.

Many Brittle Stars such as the one observed are found in the intertidal zone, occurring in rock pools but usually remaining under rocks only venturing out at night.
